LITTLE FERRY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday charged a 40-year-old man for setting fire to his own car in an attempt to collect an insurance payout.
Police and fire units responded to reports of a vehicle on fire in a residential neighborhood in Little Ferry on Saturday around 11:38 p.m.
They managed to extinguish a flaming 2008 Nissan Frontier, and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad investigated the fire.
The investigators determined the vehicle’s owner, Louis Molino, doused the interior with starter and air conditioning fluid before lighting the car on fire with a match.
Prosecutors accused him of torching the car in order to collect insurance money.
They charged him with aggravated arson and risking widespread injury or damage.
Molino is being held at Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in court.
