TOMS RIVER, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A New Jersey man suffered serious burns in a mattress fire caused by smoking, officials said Thursday.
The 64-year-old man was smoking in a bedroom at his Broad Street apartment in Toms River around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday when the mattress burst into flames, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Firefighters responded to a structure fire at the apartment complex and found the victim with serious burns to his body, prosecutors said.
No other injuries were reported in the fire.
An arson investigation by multiple agencies determined the fire was accidental and caused by smoking.
The victim was receiving treatment at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
