According to New Jersey U.S. Attorney Phillip R. Sellinger, 20-year-old Yeniser Cruz Perez of Paterson was indicted on charges of assault and attempted robbery of persons having control over mail matter and government property.

Both attempted robberies took place on Jan. 20, court documents said. The first incident happened in Wyckoff when Perez approached a mail carrier and demanded the postal service worker give him a service key that opens collection boxes and apartment panels, the court documents said.

Once he found out the mail carrier did not have the key, Perez, who had what appeared to be a gun, fled the area, the indictment said.

That same day, Perez struck again, this time in Woodland Park where he again pulled a gun on a USPS mail carrier with the same demands for a key, authorities said. He fled once again when he learned the postal service worker did not have the key, officials said.

Perez faces a maximum possible sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
