ORADELL, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A 23-year-old Bergen County man was killed when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed into each other during a training exercise at Fort Campbell in Kentucky on Wednesday.
The U.S. Army identified the nine soldiers killed in the accident, including Sgt. David Solinas from Oradell, Friday afternoon.
“This is a time of great sadness for the 101st Airborne Division. The loss of these Soldiers will reverberate through our formations for years to come,” said Maj. Gen. JP McGee in a Twitter post. ““Now is the time for grieving and healing. The whole division and this community stand behind the families and friends of our fallen Soldiers. Rest in peace.”
Gov. Phil Murphy announced flags will be flown at half-staff Tuesday to honor Solinas’ memory.
The two helicopters collided during a nighttime training exercise. One was carrying five people and the other had four. None survived.
The aircrafts went down in a field near a residential area, and no people were injured on the ground.
Beyond that initial assessment, the army has not released further details on the cause or details of the crash.
