BERKELEY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey man shot his neighbors before taking his own life after a standoff with police on Monday, Ocean County prosecutors said.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. police received a 911 call in reference to two gunshot victims at a residence on Drake Drive in Berkeley Township.

Upon arrival, responding officers discovered a husband and wife each suffering from a gunshot wound.

Both victims were airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where they are each listed in critical but stable condition.

Investigators determined that the victims had been shot by their next door neighbor, 54-year-old John Adamo, prosecutors said.

According to officials, Adamo shot the neighbor outside of his home, then fired into the home, striking the neighbor's wife. Adamo then retreated into his own residence.

The Ocean County Regional SWAT Team and the Ocean County Regional SWAT-Crisis Negotiating Team responded and surrounded Adamo’s residence in an attempt to have him surrender.

After approximately two and a half hours, SWAT Team members entered the residence and found Adamo in an upstairs bedroom – deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

They also observed a pressure cooker inside the bedroom prompting neighboring residences to evacuate for safety concerns.

The New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad entered the residence and determined the pressure cooker was not an explosive.

Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting.
