SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- A custodial worker at a New Jersey middle school was fatally struck on school grounds on Wednesday afternoon, a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said.

According to the statement, 53-year-old Dean Battaglia was struck as he was spraying weeds along a curb at Crossroads North Middle School in South Brunswick.


Battaglia was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car who hit him has not been identified.

The collision remains under investigation.

"The South Brunswick Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the South Brunswick School District on the loss today," the department said in a tweet. "We have no words, but as a community we will work to support our district and one another as best we can during this difficult time."

"Our thoughts and prayers are for his family, colleagues and friends. We are all grieving this sad loss," Superintendent of the South Brunswick School District Scott Feder wrote in a statement.

Battaglia leaves behind two children, and a fiancé who has three daughters - two at the township's high school.
