LAKEWOOD, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A New Jersey mother was charged with murdering her two young children by stabbing and drowning them at their home, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Naomi Elkins, 27, of Lakewood, was charged with two counts of murder, as well as weapons charges, in connection with the killings of her 3-year-old and 1-year-old daughters on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, police officers responded around 4:50 p.m. to a home on Shenandoah Drive in Lakewood for a report of two kids in cardiac arrest.
When the officers arrived, members of Hatzolah Medical Services were attempting to render lifesaving aid to the two kids, but the efforts were unsuccessful, and they were both pronounced dead at the scene.
The two children had been drowned, prosecutors said, and the 1-year-old had also been stabbed.
Elkins was taken into custody at the scene without incident and transported to Ocean County Jail, where she was being held Wednesday pending a detention hearing.
The news comes just days after a Queens dad was charged with the attempted murder of two children who he allegedly tried to drown at a beach in New Haven on Saturday.
