NJ 'not there yet' on lifting indoor mask rule amid new CDC guidance: Murphy

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey will wait at least a few weeks to lift its indoor mask mandate, despite the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's newly-issued guidance, Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday.

At a vaccine event in East Orange Friday afternoon, Murphy said New Jersey would likely revise its own mask rules "within a matter of weeks."

"We will get there, as it relates to indoor masking. It's only a matter of time. [But] if you're in a business and a public setting, we're not there yet," he said. "We're frankly not there yet."

The CDC on Thursday issued new guidance saying fully vaccinated people would "no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal or territorial laws, rules and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance."

Following the CDC's announcement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement saying New York state was "reviewing [the guidance] in consultation with Dr. Zucker and our partners and health experts in surrounding states."

"In New York, we have always relied on the facts and the science to guide us throughout the worst of this pandemic and in our successful reopening," he said.
