JOURNAL SQUARE, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- New Jersey police are investigating a string of violent attacks on Chinese people that have occurred over the last few months, according to authorities.

The World Journal, a Chinese-language newspaper, reported that six people were attacked in separate Journal Square incidents beginning on February 10 when a 25-year-old international student was reportedly punched in the head.

There have been at least four similar incidents, with the latest happening on Aug. 8 when a 29-year-old resident was struck from behind with a hammer, city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.

Journal Square officials believe the incidents could have been committed by the same man, who may also be Asian.

An investigation is ongoing.
