BAYONNE, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Police in New Jersey arrested a man Tuesday night who had fallen asleep in a vehicle with a handgun in plain sight, officials said.
Just before midnight, officers responded near the vicinity of 185 E. 22nd Street where they spotted 40-year-old Riney R. Smith asleep in the driver seat and the gun in the vehicle's passenger seat in clear view, Bayonne police Capt. Eric Amato said.
Police safely woke Smith up and recovered the loaded 9mm handgun with a large capacity magazine.
Heroin was also recovered during a search of the vehicle, Amato added.
Smith was charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a high capacity magazine and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
