NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – New Jersey detectives continue their investigation of a newborn baby who was found dead inside a picnic basket nearly 37 years ago.
Investigators are still looking for answers after a 5-pound-baby was found the day after Thanksgiving in 1986, wrapped in a towel and table runner abandoned in a picnic basket on top of a trash can.
The baby, who still had his umbilical cord attached, was found behind an apartment at 5 Cottage St, Bernards, South Orange.
He is believed to have been born just a day before he was found.
Investigators think that the picnic basket where the infant was found may have been purchased at a local store, which may be a lede.
Detectives are now turning to modern DNA evidence and genetic databases in hopes of identifying the baby's parents or relatives.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has made a public appeal for information related to the case.
