SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey sanitation worker died earlier this month when he fell off the truck he was riding in, officials said.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on September 2 as Ismael Oliva, 74, was standing on the platform of the back of the truck.

Oliva was near Henry Street and Mountain Avenue in Scotch Plains when the vehicle he was in hit a speed bump causing him to hit his head and fall off the truck's rear, police announced Tuesday.

Residents attempted to assist Oliva when EMS arrived and rushed him to Overlook Medical Center to continue treatment.

Oliva was later pronounced dead.

An investigation remains ongoing, according to Scotch Plains police.
