PATERSON, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey school district plans to return to a universal masking policy when classes resume after winter break in January.
Paterson Public Schools will require staff and students to mask up while inside upon their Jan. 3 return, Superintendent of Schools Eileen Shafer said.
The news comes as rates of COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and the flu continue to rise in Passaic County.
In a letter to parents, Shafer said the decision was made in consultation with the City of Paterson’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Paul Persaud.
“I know this is a relief to some, and a frustration to others,” the letter read. “No matter what your position may be, I ask for your cooperation.”
Students and staff will have to wear their masks at all times in school buildings. It can only be taken for eating, drinking or taking medication.
District officials said they will continue to monitor transmission rates and reevaluate the decision as needed.
Last week, Passaic School District also announced they will be requiring students and staff to mask upon return from winter break.
