PLUMSTED, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey sheriff's officer is facing charges for allegedly pointing a gun at a woman's head and threatening to kill her last week.
Matthew Sickler, 35, is charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, eluding and resisting arrest and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, authorities said. He remained in the Ocean County jail Tuesday without no bail, records show.
The incident happened in a residential neighborhood in Plumsted late Thursday night into early Friday, according to court documents. The woman declined medical attention.
According to NJ.com, Sackler, a Mercer County sheriff's officer, allegedly threatened to harm himself during the incident. It is unclear if he was on duty at the time.
Plumsted police officials refused to comment on the incident, saying that they were still investigating.
It's reportedly not his first run-in with the law.
Sickler was charged with simple assault and obstruction after a brawl at a hotel in Bordentown Township in September. Following those charges, which are still pending in court, the sheriff's office assigned him to desk duty.
A Mercer County sheriff’s spokesperson said Monday that Sickler is now suspended without pay and the sheriff’s office will start administrative action once the court case is completed.
"As sheriff, I have no tolerance for such incredibly bad and dangerous behavior by an officer," Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler said in a statement. "Sickler has violated the special trust and confidence in his role as a law enforcement officer. Whether on or off duty, his actions should not reflect that of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office."
