TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) — NJ Transit is embarking on a budget analysis that could lead to fare hikes, service cuts and layoffs to close the gap in a massive budget shortfall.

The transit organization could face a $957 million shortfall by 2026.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation detailed the NJ Transit realignment plan Wednesday at a Board of Directors meeting.

New Jersey DOT Commissioner and NJ Transit Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said the plan will focus on corporate consolidation, fare changes and service changes, emphasizing "all options are on table."

Corporate consolidation involves the combination of multiple entities into one, and often involves layoffs.

No decisions have been made yet in regards to the specifics of the plan, though.

Some board members called on Gov. Phil Murphy and state legislators to provide additional funding for the troubled agency.

The review will be a joint project between DOT and NJ Transit.
