LAKEWOOD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Police and state officials are investigating reports of five children bitten by a fox in Lakewood.

It’s not yet clear if the fox or foxes are rabid, but the Ocean County Health Department said all foxes should be treated as if they are suspected of having rabies.

Healthy foxes rarely attack humans.

The first incident was reported on Tuesday around 10 a.m. when a child was bitten at the John Street playground. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Later that day around 7:30 p.m., police were called to a home on Regal Court after three children were bitten while playing in their yard.

At 9:40 p.m., police received another report of a child who was bitten at the John Street Playground.

On Thursday, a rabid fox was trapped at Double Trouble State Park in Berkeley Township, which is little over 15 miles away from Lakewood.

State officials suspected the fox was responsible for attacks on two people and a dog at the park, but said it was unlikely the same animal was responsible for the Lakewood attacks due to distance.
