ELIZABETH, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A pedestrian was fatally struck on Tuesday while trying to cross a highway near Newark Airport in Elizabeth, officials reported.
The exact highway wasn't immediately clear, but U.S. Route 1 runs right through the area.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. in the 1000 block of Spring Street, across from a local motel, a city spokesperson confirmed to NJ.com.
The unidentified victim was hit while crossing a section of the highway where pedestrian access is not allowed.
The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and was not charged.
The identity of the pedestrian has not been released as police are in the process of contacting the victim's family.
