WEST NEW YORK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A police officer was shot in West New York in Northern New Jersey on Friday while responding to reports of gunfire.
The officer, who was a member of SWAT team, was shot near the intersection of 59th Street and Palisade Avenue around 6 p.m.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital in uncertain condition but is expected to survive.
The New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association, the police union that represents New Jersey officers, confirmed the shooting in a Tweet.
"OFFICER SHOT - Keep all the West New York Police officers in your prayers," wrote the PBA. "One has been shot and taken to an area hospital."
