The California congressman who led the impeachment of President Donald Trump said the president is doing real damage to his country by refusing to concede defeat.

Democratic Representative Adam Schiff of Burbank, who went to high school in Danville and college at Stanford University, told KCBS Radio’s “The State of California” that President Donald Trump is hurting the country he professes to love for his own selfish reasons.

“It’s gravely concerning that a president of the United States would not accept the election results,” he said. “This is unprecedented in our history, and the results are very clear. Donald Trump lost. Joe Biden won. Joe Biden will be our next president. But, nonetheless, trying to create doubt about our election process, trying to propagate a big lie that somehow he was stolen of his reelection – it’s really disabling of our democracy.”

Schiff said he has no doubt that Biden will take office, but he’s also just as sure congressional Republicans will try to launch investigations and attack the Biden administration from day one.

“It’s still going to be driven by Donald Trump from the sidelines, and the Trump acolytes on Fox prime time," the congressman said. "So, I expect they’ll continue playing to their base, but there’s no ‘there’ there.”

Schiff said the evidence to support the unfounded claims against Joe Biden and his son Hunter is as imaginary as the evidence that Biden somehow stole the election from President Trump.

As for his own future, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee said he has not spoken with Governor Gavin Newsom about replacing Kamala Harris in the Senate, but his name is on the very long list of rumored potential successors.
