NEW YORK (1010 WINS) --- Former Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday that the federal government should explain the "bona fide nature" of its raid on former president Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago property in Florida as to not feed into a Republican narrative that Democrats are politicizing the Jan. 6 investigation into the riot at the U.S. Capitol.

The FBI on Monday executed a search warrant of Trump's Palm Beach home. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, for example, called the search "an escalation in the weaponization of federal agencies."

"DOJ must immediately explain the reason for its raid & it must be more than a search for inconsequential archives or it will be viewed as a political tactic and undermine any future credible investigation & legitimacy of January 6 investigations," Cuomo, who resigned from office last August after a ballooning sexual harassment scandal, tweeted.

Cuomo further explained in a subsequent tweet, "DOJ must disclose the bona fide nature of the August 8 action or else the republicans will use it to Discredit the Jan 6 investigation, which would be a terrible disservice to the good work of the house committee in exposing The Trump administration violations."

Trump broke news of the raid Monday night, saying in a statement, "My beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents." He added, "they even broke into my safe."

According to multiple reports citing unnamed sources, the FBI descended upon Mar-a-Lago as part of an investigation into the handling of presidential documents, including classified documents, that may have been brought there.
