NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- President-elect Joe Biden has decided on his pick for Treasury Secretary: Former Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing sources familiar with the decision.
The current Treasury Secretary is Steven Mnuchin.
If confirmed by the Senate, Yellen would be the first woman to lead the department. She was confirmed by the Senate in 2014 to lead the Fed, which was also another first for a woman.
Yellen is currently an economist at the Brookings Institute. Before becoming Fed chair, Yellen was at the helm of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank and was the 18th chair of the Council of Economic Advisers under the Clinton administration.
Yellen, 74, was born in Brooklyn to Anna Ruth, an elementary school teacher, and Julius Yellen, a family physician, who worked from the ground floor of their home. She graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge as a valedictorian.
Neither Biden nor Yellen has commented.
