About 200,000 small U.S., state and territorial flags were installed on the National Mall.

The flags pay tribute to the nearly 400,000 Americans who have died from coronavirus, as well as represent those who cannot attend the ceremony in person.

The display also includes 56 pillars of light representing the 50 states and U.S. territories.

When the pillars were illuminated Monday night, the lighting took about 46 seconds to commemorate Biden as the country's 46th president.
