NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A jury ruled that former president Donald Trump must pay columnist E. Jean Carroll a total of $83.3 million in damages for defamation.
The breakdown is $65 million in punitive damages and $18.3 million in compensatory damages.
Last May, another jury found Trump guilty of sexual abuse in a trial addressing Carroll’s claim that he assaulted her in a New York City department store in 1996, and later defamed her by saying she made it up. Trump is appealing that $5 million award.
Friday’s verdict is the result of the defamation trial, which addressed things the former president said about Carroll while in office. Trump continued to insist he was falsely accused, and called Carroll a liar.
The verdict was delivered by a jury of two women and seven men at a trial Trump regularly attended, and stormed out of on Friday during Carroll’s attorney’s closing arguments. He returned to hear his lawyer’s final remarks, and the judge’s instructions to the jury.
In response to the verdict, Trump released a statement confirming his attention to appeal the case alongside the 2023 decision.
“Absolutely ridiculous! I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party. Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”
