NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Trump campaign trashed NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, the moderator of Thursday night's town hall, describing the journalist instead as a "debate opponent" and "Joe Biden surrogate."

Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign's communications director, said in a statement, "Even though the commission canceled the in-person debate that could have happened tonight, one occurred anyway, and President Trump soundly defeated NBC's Savannah Guthrie in her role as debate opponent and Joe Biden surrogate."

Taking further aim at Guthrie, Murtaugh said, "President Trump masterfully handled Guthrie's attacks and interacted warmly and effectively with the voters in the room."

He then pivoted to Joe Biden, who simultaneously had his own town hall on ABC.

"Over on ABC it was a completely different scene," Murtaugh said, "as once again Biden was kept comfortable and away from any questions that might challenge him."
