Trump had been tweeting about Booker earlier, calling him a "total loser" and "failed presidential candidate." The president began lashing out at Booker after he questioned Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.

Booker shot back on Twitter, "Stop attacking Newark and do your damn job, @realDonaldTrump."
Booker's chief of staff Matt Klapper mocked Trump for calling the senator "stupid."
"That stupid Rhodes Scholar was a failed mayor who ushered in the greatest economic boom in generations, drove down crime & rooted out corruption. While we’re at it, Newark is a beautiful city with beautiful people, Cory lives there, and he’s not coming to destroy your suburbs," Klapper tweeted.
