HARTFORD, CT (1010 WINS) — Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont harnessed the words of John Lennon and referenced the movie “Footloose” during his state of the state address Wednesday.

During the address, Lamont, who was reelected to a second term, spoke on the state’s progress since his first term which took off in the midst of the pandemic.

“John Lennon sang ‘Imagine.’ He also said, ‘Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans,’” Lamont said during his speech. “And nobody had a plan for Covid. I knew what I didn’t know, and I knew how to reach out to the people who did.”

The Democratic lawmaker reflected on how his first term was focused on rescue in the early days of pandemic—getting supplies, funding and supporting communities. This term, Lamont said, will be aimed at recovery.

“The next four years should focus more on recovery, less on rescue, less need for lifelines, and more focus on ladders,” Lamont said. “Keep our economy growing, making sure that growth means a ladder to opportunity for everyone regardless of background or zip code.”

One of the biggest ways Connecticut needs to recover, according to Lamont, is with jobs and economic growth. The governor said the state has identified the issues which have led to more than 100,000 open jobs and are working on targeted fixes which include increased child care assistance and higher minimum wages.

Lamont closed out his speech addressing the Twitter criticism he got for his public dancing skills during his last inauguration but encouraged his constituents to continue celebrating, and dancing, for Connecticut.

“Party like a liberated governor. Let your hair down. Let’s see a little “Footloose” on the dancefloor, maybe with somebody you don’t know but you often see around the Capitol,” Lamont said. “It's my party and I’ll dance if I want to, and so should you.”
