The milk contained a “non-toxic consumable sanitizer” used to clean machines at Guida’s Dairy, the New Jersey vendor that distributes milk to the schools.

The company sent emergency teams to evaluate the extent of the contamination and instructed all schools to stop serving milk after management there became aware of the situation.

At least 64 students were affected by the tainted milk, and over 30 were sent to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution” after they started vomiting, a police spokesperson told NJ Advance Media.

The clear cleaning substance had an “antiseptic-like odor,” Camden county officials said. They did not specify how the substance made its way into the sealed cartons.

Early Childhood Development Center and Riletta T. Cream Elementary School were both affected by the contamination, but county officials did not specify which other schools were impacted.

Parents were informed via robocalls and social media posts of the incident.
