SOMERVILLE, N.J. (1010 WINS) – A New York man punched an umpire during a U13 little league baseball game in Branchburg Township, New Jersey, and was charged with assault, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
The incident took place on June 4, at around 8 p.m. Branchburg Township Police officers were dispatched to White Oak Park for a report of an assault.
Jerry Otero, 40, from Staten Island, punched the umpire on the left side of his cheek and left the park before police arrived.
The victim, a 72-year-old male umpire, was bleeding when the officers arrived. He explained that while he was umpiring a little league baseball game and had ejected Otero, one of the coaches, for using foul language.
It was later determined that after receiving medical treatment the victim had sustained a fractured jaw and concussion from being struck, investigators said.
Otero turned himself in on June 21 at around 8:30 a.m. and was charged with Aggravated Assault and Assault at a Youth Sports Event.
