NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A high school basketball star died in a car crash on Long Island on Wednesday, Nassau County officials confirmed.
According to police, 15-year-old Jomani Wright, a sophomore at Uniondale High School was inside a 2012 Honda CRV with three teammates heading to workout at around 2 p.m. when the vehicle collided with a 2006 Toyota driven by an 87-year-old man at Maple Avenue and Front Street in Uniondale.
The collision caused the Honda to slam into a pole, where Wright was a rear passenger, officials said.
Wright, a point guard who was considered Nassau County's top player was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The driver and other passengers, all 18 or younger, were transported to other area hospitals and treated for minor injuries.
Uniondale coach Tom Diana confirmed that 18-year-old senior Moses Styles was among those in the vehicle with Wright.
Styles is currently recovering at a local hospital.
"I am devastated," Diana said. "He was the best. A different kind of kid. And he might have been one of the most talented players to ever walk the halls at our school. He had a great future."
The team were meeting at the high school Wednesday night to huddle and meet with grief counselors, Diana added.
"On behalf of the Nassau County Police Department, our condolences go out to the family, friends and teammates of Jomani (Jo-Jo) Wright," Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun, a Nassau County police spokesman said in a statement.
"Yesterday January 27, 2021 the Uniondale family and the world lost a young legend. Jomani Wright had quite a resume as such a young age," Uniondale basketball wrote on Instagram.
"Our prayers and condolences goes out to his family during this tough time. Words cannot describe how we feel because this is not normal. Jojo had so much ahead of him and for it to be cut so short is just heartbreaking.
Please keep his family in your prayers, thank you. Long live King Jojo."
