MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Two students were injured at a middle school in Orange County on Wednesday morning in a “student-on-student” incident involving a knife, officials said.
The incident sent Monhagen Middle School in Middletown into lockdown, according to a Facebook post from the school district around 8:30 a.m.
Officials confirmed that no intruder entered the building and that it was believed to be an issue between students. All of those involved were taken into police custody.
Two students were transported to an area hospital to be treated, police said.
Law enforcement swarmed the area and did a full check of the campus. “The situation was isolated to one area of the building,” the district said in an update shortly before 9:30 a.m.
An early dismissal of 9:45 a.m. was being implemented for middle school students.
Both the middle school and nearby Maple Hill Elementary School were to remain on lockdown “until further notice,” but the elementary school was “operating on a normal schedule,” the district said.
Police will have an increased presence at the district’s campuses on Wednesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the young people who were injured and affected in today’s incident and our entire Monhagen Middle School community,” the district said as the investigation continued.
