SETAUKET, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – Police arrested a woman accused of intentionally running over an 84-year-old woman with her own car during a violent carjacking at a Long Island Walmart parking lot Thursday.
According to police, the victim was parking her 2013 Subaru Forrester at the Walmart located on Nesconset Highway in Setauket when she briefly exited the vehicle to move a shopping cart that was in the middle of the parking spot.
That's when police say Dareine Heller, 34, of Holbrook, ran to the car, entered the driver's seat, and attempted to drive away. When the victim approached the car, a struggle ensued and Heller allegedly shoved the victim to the ground before intentionally running her over with the vehicle.
The victim was dragged for a short distance before the suspect sped away.
As Heller attempted to flee the scene, police said she struck a pole, a stop sign, a separate vehicle, and a brick retaining wall before successfully escaping.
The 84-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Heller drove to 255 Pond Path, Centereach, where she was located and arrested at approximately 1 p.m.
The vehicle was impounded.
She faces charges including multiple counts of robbery and assault, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident causing injuries. Additionally, Heller was charged with two counts of drug possession.
She is set to be arraigned on Friday.
