Couple killed in apparent murder-suicide inside Mt. Vernon home
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Officials are investigating after a couple was found dead inside their Mount Vernon home early Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Just before 6 a.m., police received a 911 call of shots being fired inside a home on South 14th Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of a husband and wife with apparent gunshot wounds.
"We've been talking about mass shootings and regular shootings all around the country, and to be awakened by a phone call from my chief of police, I knew that it was not good news. And to understand, you know, how the incident unfolded, it was just very heartbreaking," Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard told WCBS-TV.
The couple's three young kids were inside the home at the time of the shooting, authorities said.
The children were not injured and found unharmed at another home with family members.
"The children are devastated. When you realize that both of your parents are dead, it's devastating, whether they're 5 or they're 50," Patterson-Howard said.
The name of the couple have not yet been released.
Officials are investigating what led to the shooting.
