NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont took to social media Thursday, seemingly joking about renaming Long Island Sound to Connecticut Sound.
"While the maps are changing, here's an idea…" Lamont wrote on X, posting a map with "Long Island Sound" crossed out and replaced with "Connecticut Sound" while tagging New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Lamont's post comes as Google Maps officially adopted the new name "Gulf of America" this week, following President Donald Trump's executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico. Trump first announced the name change before taking office on Jan. 20, signing an order to implement it immediately after his inauguration.
Hochul did not respond on X.
An online petition also called for Long Island Sound to be renamed.
"America has long ignored the greatness of CONNECTICUT! Such as being the pizza capital of the WORLD!!!" the Change.org petition reads, saying that the body of water should instead be named the "Gulf of Connecticut."
Lamont leaned into the joke.
"I think so, why not? I mean, I got a president who's naming things anytime he wants to," Lamont said, according to NBC Connecticut. "I think Long Island Sound is a little dated. I think Connecticut Sound has got a real ring to it."
As of Thursday afternoon, the petition had over 383 signatures.
Meanwhile, Apple Maps initially continued using "Gulf of Mexico", but by Tuesday evening, the platform started displaying "Gulf of America" on some browsers.
