NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A former fire chief was arrested after allegedly forging a drone license to operate equipment for the fire department, according to the New York State Police.
Michael J. Leonelli, 46, of Central Square, was charged with forgery in the second degree, forgery in the third degree, and criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, police said.
An investigation began in July 2024, after state police received a complaint from the Caughdenoy Fire Department. The fire department then requested that Leonelli provide his FAA certificate, which is required to legally operate a drone for commercial or official purposes.
Instead of providing a valid certificate, Leonelli allegedly submitted a forged document, claiming he possessed the required certification.
The State Police were assisted in the investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General.
