SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A 5-year-old girl was fatally hit by a school bus in Rockland County on Friday morning, the Spring Valley Police Department said.

At 11:15 a.m., County Radio Headquarters was notified that a pedestrian was struck on South Madison Avenue and West Funston Street.

Officers immediately responded and “discovered medical personnel already on the scene of what tragically turned out to be a five-year old girl fatally struck by a school bus,” police said.

The girl was not immediately identified by police, and further details about the collision were not immediately available.

According to The Journal News, the Spring Valley Police Department was joined by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department, Town of Ramapo police and New York State Police on the scene, and an area near the crash site was blocked off.

“It was a madhouse earlier,” a bystander told The Journal News. “Parents of the kids on the bus were trying to cross the line to check on their children, but police took them one by one to see them.”

Another bystander told reporters that the bus driver was “destroyed.”

The investigation is ongoing.
