NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A gunman who allegedly opened fire inside a Stop & Shop on Long Island Tuesday morning, killing one person and injuring two others, has been taken into custody, Nassau County police said.
Nassa County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder identified the suspect as 30-year-old Gabriel Dewitt Wilson, a former employee of the Stop & Shop on Cherry Valley Avenue in West Hempstead.
Wilson's attorney information wasn't immediately available Tuesday afternoon.
Police responded to a 911 call reporting multiple shots fired at the store in the Cherry Valley shopping center around 11:20 a.m., police spokesman Richard Goetchius said.
Authorities said a 49-year-old male employee was killed and two others were injured inside a second-floor manager's office.
The injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals and were conscious and alert, officials said.
Wilson was taken into custody after four-hour long search, police said. He was considered armed and dangerous after the shooting.
Police asked all area residents to remain indoors and locked down several nearby buildings during the manhunt.
In a statement released after the shooting, Stop & Shop said it was “shocked and heartbroken by this act of violence."
"Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, our associates, customers and the first responders who have responded heroically to this tragic situation," the statement read. "At this time, we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement on the investigation. The store will remain closed until further notice, and we appreciate the Long Island community's support during this difficult time."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed New York State Police to help Nassau County officials in the search for the gunman.
"We are closely monitoring the ongoing situation in West Hempstead," Cuomo said in a statement. "My team and I are in constant contact with first responders on the ground. I'm praying for the victims, and my heart breaks for their families and loved ones."
