NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams is expected to announce a run for governor early next week, according to a report.
Sources told Politico that Williams, a Democrat, will enter the 2022 race, joining an already crowded field that includes incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul and state Attorney General Letitia James.
Williams, who was just reelected, had announced back in September that he was exploring the option, saying he would help usher in a more drastic change in Albany's political culture from his more leftist perspective.
"There is a culture there that is steeped in a lot of old ways of doing things; I think that's very hard to renew unless you really shake it up in a very significant way," Williams said at the time.
Williams lost a close race against Hochul for lieutenant governor back in 2018.
The gubernatorial jockeying comes after Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned in disgrace this summer amid a cloud of sexual assault allegations.
Williams' office did not immediately return a request for comment.
