LI driver arrested for DWI after crash kills passenger

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Long Island man was arrested for DWI in a fatal car accident that occurred early Sunday morning, authorities said.

According to detectives, at around 4:47 a.m. on Feb. 9, police responded for an car accident that occurred west bound on Stewart Avenue at Nassau Boulevard in Garden City.

Upon arrival, officers observed a 2007 Nissan that had struck a tree. The driver had fled the scene on foot.

Marco Antonio Zuniga, 27, was a rear passenger who suffered severe body trauma. He was transported to local hospital for treatment and later pronounced dead.

A short time later Garden City police located the driver, Christhian Velasquez-Geleano, 28.

After an investigation it was determined that Velasquez-Geleano was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was placed him into police custody without incident.

Velasquez-Geleano was charged with DWI, vehicular manslaughter and no interlock device. He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Monday,
