ISLAND PARK, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A man was arrested on Long Island Wednesday for allegedly harassing an 18-year-old food delivery driver while he prayed.

Thomas McGarry, 67, was charged with aggravated harassment.

According to police, the victim was making a food delivery to an Island Park residence at approximately 6 p.m. After completing the delivery, he took a prayer mat from his vehicle, placed it on the ground, and began to pray.

During the victim's prayer, McGarry, allegedly began yelling and directing derogatory terms at the victim, who explained that he was simply praying. The confrontation escalated when McGarry made a violent threat, officials said.

Police were notified of the incident, and McGarry was arrested. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to court on Dec. 24.

Police didn't say what the victim's religion is, though prayer rugs are often associated with the Islamic faith.
