NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Long Island couple was indicted for manslaughter on Monday and face a variety of other charges related to the apparent drug overdose and death of their 14-month-old son in 2022, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said.

“Fourteen-month-old Joseph Adonis died from an overdose due to ingesting a cocktail of heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl,” said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. “How many more innocent children must die for change to be enacted? It is well past the time for New York State legislators to wake up, put politics aside, and pass common sense legislation related to fentanyl.”

Wilkens Adonis, 38, and Daryllee Leibrock, 38, of Holbrook, were each indicted on manslaughter, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of weapon, and other related charges, for allegedly possessing guns and illicit drugs in the same apartment they shared with Joseph who allegedly died due to acute mixed drug intoxication by a mixture of heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl.

Adonis was charged in a 20-count indictment, and Leibrock was charged in a 22-count indictment in connection with the death of 14-month-old Joseph Adonis.

On the morning of Jan. 3, Suffolk County police responded to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, officers found Wilkens, Leibrock and their unresponsive toddler in the couple’s bedroom.

Emergency personnel took Joseph to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

According to the investigation, detectives from the county Homicide Squad discovered drugs in the bedroom where Joseph was found.

Narcotics Section detectives joined the investigation and helped execute a search warrant on the apartment, where officials found over one-eighth ounce a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, over one-eighth ounce of cocaine, alprazolam (a psychotropic medication), drug packaging materials, drug scales, a stun gun, a loaded shotgun and a rifle.

Everything discovered was allegedly unsecured and easily accessible to the children, prosecutors said.

At the time of the child’s death, Leibrock was subject to Suffolk County Family Court orders of protection that prohibited her from being near either child, and both defendants had open warrants for failure to appear in court on misdemeanor drug charges.

A preliminary toxicology report of Joseph Adonis showed multiple substances in his blood, including cocaine, fentanyl, morphine, 4-anpp (a fentanyl precursor), and metabolites of cocaine and fentanyl.

Adonis and Leibrack will each be held on $500,000 cash, $1 million bond, or $5 million partially secured bond during the pendency of the case.

Both defendants are due back in court on May 14.
