NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The Town of Hempstead closed its beaches to swimming Wednesday afternoon following yet another shark sighting in the waters off of Long Island.
"Due to a recent shark sighting off Atlantic Beach, the Town of Hempstead is prohibiting beachgoers from swimming/bathing in the ocean at township operated beaches," the town tweeted Wednesday afternoon.
"Please stay tuned for further updates via social media as Town personnel assess the situation," the town added.
Town lifeguards spotted one shark, and three more sharks are on their way to Lido West from Long Beach, according to a town press release.
The town's Shark Patrol team will be monitoring the area on jet skis and row boats, officials say.
The closure comes after a shark sighting off of Jones Beach caused swimming to be suspended Tuesday.
A lifeguard also claimed they were bitten by a shark near Jones Beach’s Central Mall on Monday.
