NORTH AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Long Island detectives launched an investigation after a man was injured in a police involved shooting on Wednesday, authorities said.
At approximately 11:45 a.m., two officers were transporting a prisoner on Route 109 when they observed 20-year-old Jayvon Bell, who was wanted for a robbery incident in May as well as menacing earlier this month, police said.
The officers relayed the information and two plainclothes officers responded and observed Bell in the area.
Bell fled from police, jumped a fence, but officials tracked him down at a backyard on Maple Road in North Amityville a short time later, cops said.
At approximately 12 p.m., Bell pulled out a firearm and shot at police officers, one of whom returned fire, authorities said.
Bell was struck multiple times and airlifted to a Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Bell was charged with robbery and menacing. Additional charges are pending.
He will be arraigned on a later date pending release from the hospital.
