The driver identified by police as William Petersohn, 38, was traveling southbound on William Floyd Parkway and Yaphank Woods Boulevard at around midnight Wednesday in a Chevrolet pickup truck when it struck the rear of a GMC Yukon which then hit the police vehicle.

The force of the impact caused the Yukon to slam into the officer, authorities said.

Police said the officer blocked the roadway as it responded to an earlier incident and was handling traffic on the road.

The officer and Petersohn were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. The GMC driver was not injured.

Petersohn is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
