WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A Connecticut man was sentenced on Friday to 14 years in prison after he was convicted for shooting at another car during a road rage dispute on I-95 in Westchester, prosecutors said.
Stephen Escoffery, 45, was convicted last month of second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment for the December 2022 incident.
A man was driving northbound in the left lane of I-95 near Harrison, New York, when Escoffery approached from behind while driving his BMW. After a non-verbal disagreement, Escoffery then pulled up beside the victim, waved a pistol at him and fired it, striking the vehicle.
“Motorists on our public roadways expect to navigate traffic, not bullets. It is unacceptable to recklessly endanger the life of a fellow motorist for any reason,” Westchester District Attorney Susan Cacace said. “So-called ‘road rage’ is never an appropriate response to motorway disputes.”
A victim impact statement was read aloud by prosecutors during the sentencing, with the victim noting that “the mental damage this incident has caused has been extremely challenging for me.”
“Driving on the highway at night has become an anxiety-ridden experience for me,” the statement continued.
In addition to the 14 years in prison, the judge also sentenced Escoffery to five years post-release supervision and issued an order of protection for the victim.
