NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man was indicted on Friday for allegedly shooting another man twice in the parking lot of a Long Island casino, causing serious injuries, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney.
Nashawn Legros, 24, of Wyandanch, faces charges of attempted murder, assault, weapon possession, and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
"This defendant’s alleged crimes not only threatened the victim’s life but also the lives of everyone else in the casino parking lot at the time," Tierney said. "That is unacceptable."
According to court documents, on May 31, around 10 p.m., Legros was sitting in a parked car in the Jake’s 58 Casino parking lot when he saw the victim walking toward the casino entrance.
Legros allegedly got out of the car, quickly approached the victim, and shot him in the chest and stomach, according to prosecutors.
The victim managed to make it inside the casino before collapsing. He received emergency care from casino staff and civilians before being taken to the hospital for surgery. The victim survived but sustained serious injuries.
Prosecutors did not clarify the motive behind the attack or whether the two knew each other beforehand.
Immediately after the shooting, Legros allegedly fled the scene in the car, which he was not authorized to use, and later abandoned it in Central Islip.
He was arrested on Thursday in Riverhead with the help of the United States Marshals Service and the Suffolk County Police Department’s Narcotics Section.
Legros is being held on $1,000,000 cash bail, $2,000,000 bond, or $10,000,000 partially secured bond. He is due back in court on Sept. 6 and is being represented by the Legal Aid Society.
