MINEOLA, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Long Island officials charged a man after he allegedly punched a probation officer in face during an arrest on Tuesday evening.
According to detectives, at 5:10 p.m., police responded to assist Nassau County Probation conducting a probation visit at 400 County Seat Dr. in Mineola.
Upon arrival, officers were informed that Michael Thomas, 24, refused to comply with verbal commands and resisted as a Nassau County Probation Officer attempted to place him into custody.
Thomas was violent and combative, striking the officer on the right side of his face with a closed fist, causing substantial pain, authorities said.
Officers were eventually able to place Thomas into custody and as a result, an officer suffered injuries during the course of the arrest.
The officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Thomas was charged with assault, resisting arrest and an open Nassau County warrant for violation of probation.
He will be arraigned on Wednesday.
