BEACON, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A husband and wife were arrested for plotting and executing the murder of the woman’s ex-husband, the Department of Justice announced Thursday.
Prosecutors described a meticulous scheme planned by Nicholas Orsini, 35, and Jamie Orsini, 36, to kill Jamie’s ex-husband and the father of her two children, Steven Kraft.
The duo used cash to purchase a 10-by-100-foot tarp, duct tape, a Tyvek hazmat suit and a burner phone before going on a “dry run” of the killing in which they traveled from their home in Beacon to Newburgh, according to officials.
On April 28, after Kraft dropped his children off at the Orsini’s home, the couple allegedly carjacked and murdered him.
After lying to a coworker to explain his absence the following day, Nicholas allegedly drove Kraft’s car along the same route they traveled during the dry run. He eventually ditched the car in Newburgh and walked over a mile to a gas station where he used the burner phone to call a taxi.
In the days following the killing, the Orsini’s traveled more than 120 miles away to buy equipment to dismember and burn the body, according to prosecutors.
After Googling “is galvanized steel fireproof,” Nicholas allegedly bought two 31-gallon galvanized steel trash cans a coarse stainless-steel rod, an angle grinder with grinding wheel, five metal disks, three 32-ounce bottles of odorless charcoal grates, an axe, a flame lighter and 16 bundles of firewood.
“A little over three years ago, Nicholas and Jamie Orsini allegedly plotted to and did kill Jamie’s ex-husband, Steven Kraft. Their alleged scheme was sophisticated — it involved burner phones, stealing and dumping Kraft’s car, and, ultimately, disposing of Kraft’s body,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. “In doing so, the Orsinis denied Kraft’s family — including Kraft’s children with Jamie — the dignity of having a proper burial. This complaint shows that no matter how well you cover up your heinous act, law enforcement will not relent until they have uncovered your crimes.”
Both defendants face charges of carjacking resulting in death and conspiracy. They could each serve life in prison if convicted.
