NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A group of Long Island politicians have asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo to allow counties to hold parades on Memorial Day weekend.
Nassau County's Republican-led legislature sent a letter to Cuomo asking him to grant municipalities the option to hold the events ahead of Memorial Day, which falls on Monday, May 31 this year, the New York Post reported.
"The brave men and women who lost their lives in service to our nation deserve to be recognized for their sacrifice," Nassau County Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello said in a statement provided to the outlet.
"If we can safely attend a baseball game, or visit a museum or beach, we should be able to gather to honor those who have laid down their lives for our country," he added.
1010 WINS has reached out to Cuomo's office for comment on the letter.
