NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Peekskill man was sentenced to prison for fatally stabbing his stepfather and burning down his mother’s apartment in 2022, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced on Tuesday.

Shane Gilleo, 32, was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for murder with an indeterminate term of five to 15 years for arson, prosecutors said.

“This defendant murdered Edward Reeves in cold blood and then lit his own mother’s home on fire,” Rocah said. “Today’s sentence holds this defendant fully accountable for his violent and deadly actions.”

According to court documents, the murder happened at around 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 14, 2022, Gilleo stabbed the 48-year-old victim seven times in the arm, abdomen, thigh and chest with a knife in a parking lot outside his grandmother’s Peekskill apartment on North James Street. He then fled the scene.

The victim was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where he died from his injuries. The Peekskill Police Department recovered the knife used to kill the victim and Gilleo's cell phone at the scene, prosecutors said.

Gilleo was on federal supervised release from prison and subject to home confinement with an ankle monitor.

Eleven hours later, at around 11:30 a.m., Gilleo barricaded himself inside his mother’s Peekskill apartment as police surrounded the two-family residence in an attempt to get him to surrender.

A further investigation found that Gilleo set three separate fires inside the apartment before punching out the windows and jumping out of a second story window. The apartment was rendered uninhabitable.

Following their investigation, the Peekskill Police Department arrested Gilleo.
