NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The New York State Senate on Thursday approved a bill that would strip Donald Trump's name from a state park in Westchester and Putnam counties.
"New York's Senate just gave Donald Trump an early birthday present: we're stripping his name from a State Park," Sen. Brad Hoylman, who sponsored the legislation, said in a statement.
Trump's birthday is June 14. He will be turning 75 years old.
State lawmakers have been trying for several years to remove the former president's name from the underdeveloped state land, which was named for him after he donated 436 acres of land to establish the park in 2006.
Trump and his organization had originally intended to build a golf course on the land.
In a statement, Sen. Hoylman said the former president does not deserve having New York State land named for him.
"The mob violence that Trump incited on January 6 led to the storming of the U.S. Capitol, the death of five people, including a police officer, and an unprecedented second impeachment. Trump has dishonored the state and should not be honored with a state park named for him," Hoylman said.
The legislation would require the state's Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation to study the legal issues regarding the Donald J. Trump State Park, and "change the name of the park, install updated signage, and commit to park improvements for the enjoyment of the public."
The bill's fate remains unclear in the Assembly. The state Legislature was set to close its legislative session by Friday.
